Subterranean Termites

Did you know that termites are the #1 greatest pest threat in North Texas?

Subterranean Termites in The Colony Texas by Falkin Pest ControlThe most common termites in North Texas are subterranean termites. In Texas alone, subterranean termites cause close to $500 million in damaged property each year. If a home is unprotected, there is about 70% probability that it will get termite damage within 25 years.

There are 4 types of termites: "Queen", "Soldiers", "Workers" and "Swarmers". The queen can also decide what type of termite she produces based off colony needs. Termites are blind. They randomly forage for food (wood). However, they have learned that cooler soil temperatures means greater probability of food. For example, a house blocking the sun’s rays, or the shadow of a tree stump.

Subterranean termites expand their footprint by sending out winged termites. This is known as swarming, and only happens in colonies after 3-4 years. Swarming typically happens when temperatures rise, usually after rainfall. Subterranean termites will die quickly if exposed to the open air, so they travel above ground by making mud tubes which they can build vertically in the open air.

Subterranean termites are stealthy! They only need 1/64 inch gap to access your home through the concrete or brick in the foundation of a home. Since many areas in North Texas also have foundation issues and cracks, this gives termites easy access, and often go unnoticed for years before a homeowner identifies the problem.

Quarterly pest control WILL NOT take care of termites. Since the colony is underground and protected by soil, special equipment and products are required to effectively treat them.
